How Gainers Today collects and ranks market data
Two exchange APIs, one snapshot every 15 minutes, a $1M volume floor, and a short list of things the site declines to show.

Where the numbers come from
A scheduled job on the site’s own server calls five public, keyless endpoints every 15 minutes. Your browser never calls the exchanges; it reads one stored snapshot from this site.
- Coinbase Exchange: the list of products, the 24-hour and 30-day statistics of every product, and the names of the currencies.
- Kraken: the list of asset pairs and the ticker of every pair.
These are the exchanges’ own market-data APIs, published for public use. No aggregator, no scraped page and no stock-market feed is involved. Stocks are not covered because no free source grants the right to display them publicly.

How each figure is computed
| Figure | Definition |
|---|---|
| 24h change | (last price ÷ price 24 hours earlier − 1) × 100, both from Coinbase Exchange. Rolling window. |
| Change today (Kraken page) | (last price ÷ opening price of the UTC day − 1) × 100, both from Kraken. |
| 7d change | (current price ÷ price stored at the first collection of the UTC day seven days earlier − 1) × 100. |
| 24h volume | Coinbase: units traded × last price. Kraken: units traded × 24-hour volume-weighted average price. The main tables add the two. |
| vs 30d avg | Coinbase 24-hour volume ÷ (Coinbase 30-day volume ÷ 30), in units of the asset. |
| 24h range | Coinbase 24-hour low and high; the tick marks (last − low) ÷ (high − low). |
| Price gap | |Coinbase price − Kraken price| ÷ their midpoint × 100, for assets quoted on both. |
| Volume difference | |Coinbase 24h volume − Kraken 24h volume|, indicating which exchange carries more trading activity for the asset. |
| Bid-ask | (best ask − best bid) ÷ their midpoint × 100, from Kraken. |
The volume floor
By default a market must have traded at least $1M in 24 hours to appear in any ranking, including the top crypto gainers and top crypto losers boards. The filter above each table can raise the floor to $10M or remove it. With the floor removed, rows under $1M are hatched and labelled thin, and a warning appears above the table.
The reason is practical. A percentage ranking with no filter puts the least-traded assets on top, because the less money a market holds, the less it takes to move it. Those are also the markets where a quoted price is hardest to realise and where organised price manipulation is cheapest. The floor does not make the remaining assets safe; it removes the cases where the percentage is close to meaningless.
The crypto market heatmap always applies the $1M floor and shows the 30 most traded markets above it.
What is left out, on purpose
- Stablecoins. Excluded from rankings and from the heatmap: AUDD, BUSD, DAI, EURC, EURQ, EURR, EURT, FDUSD, GUSD, GYEN, PAX, PYUSD, RLUSD, TGBP, TUSD, USD1, USDC, USDD, USDG, USDP, USDQ, USDR, USDS, USDT, UST, ZUSD, plus any product Coinbase flags as a fiat stablecoin.
- Markets not open for trading. Offline, delisted, cancel-only, auction-mode and trading-disabled markets.
- Non-dollar pairs. Only USD quotes are used, so that each asset has one price.
- Market capitalisation. Exchanges do not publish circulating supply. No column is shown rather than one taken from a source without a licence.
- Reasons for a move. There is no news, catalyst or “why it moved” field. The sources carry prices, not causes, and a guessed cause is misinformation.
- Trading signals. No “overbought”, “oversold”, “buy” or “sell” label is computed or displayed.
Delay, failures and the example snapshot
Each snapshot carries the time of its collection, shown in UTC above every table together with its age. A snapshot older than 40 minutes is labelled Delayed. The pages reload the snapshot every 15 minutes while the tab is visible.
If Coinbase Exchange cannot be read, the collection is abandoned and the previous snapshot is kept, with its original time. If Kraken cannot be read, the snapshot is stored without Kraken figures and the status line names the missing source. If no snapshot exists at all, the page says the data is unavailable and shows no numbers.
Local builds of this site, where no collector runs, load a dated example snapshot instead. It was captured from the same endpoints with the same code, and the status line marks it as example data that is not live. It is never used on the published site.

Questions and answers
Can the rankings be wrong?
Yes. The site republishes what the exchanges report. A bad print, a halted market or an outage at the source flows into the snapshot. When an exchange does not answer, the status line above the table says which one is missing.
What happens when a collection fails?
If Coinbase Exchange cannot be read, nothing is written and the previous snapshot stays, with its original time; after 40 minutes it is labelled as delayed. If only Kraken fails, the snapshot is stored with Coinbase data and a note that Kraken is missing.
Do exchanges or projects pay to appear?
No. The order of every table is a sort of the collected figures. There is no field for sponsorship in the data.
Will stocks or more exchanges be added?
Stocks only with a licensed data source that permits public display. Other exchanges can be added when their terms allow redistribution of market data.
