What the price gap measures
Each exchange reports the last trade in its own market. The gap is the difference between those two prices, in dollars and as a percentage of their midpoint. Both prices come from the same collection, so the gap describes that moment, not the price now: the snapshot can be up to 15 minutes old, and a gap can close within seconds.
A gap is not a profit. It leaves out trading fees on each exchange, the cost and time of moving funds between them, and the bid-ask spread on each side. The spread on Kraken is on the Kraken movers page.
Where the 24-hour volume traded
Each exchange reports its own 24-hour volume, and this page shows both next to the Coinbase share of the combined total. A share close to 100% means most of the day’s trading happened on Coinbase. The Kraken price then rests on much less trading, so the gap is worth reading with that in mind.
The volume gap in the sort menu is the difference between the two exchanges’ volumes in dollars. Sorting by it puts first the coins where the two venues’ volumes differ most.
Which coins appear
- Quoted in US dollars on Coinbase Exchange and as a US-dollar pair on Kraken, both online in this snapshot.
- Combined 24-hour volume at or above the floor you pick. The default is $1,000,000; “All” also shows thin markets, marked.
- Stablecoins are left out, as on every other page.
Percentage changes are not compared here, because Coinbase measures a rolling 24 hours and Kraken measures from 00:00 UTC. Each exchange’s change has its own page: Coinbase movers and Kraken movers.
Questions and answers
Is a price gap between the two exchanges a profit?
Not by itself. The gap compares two last trades taken in the same collection, before trading fees, transfer costs, the time a transfer takes and the bid-ask spread on each side. Prices move within seconds, and the snapshot can be up to 15 minutes old.
Why is an asset missing if it trades on both exchanges?
Usually because its combined 24-hour volume is below the floor you chose. Choose “All” in the volume filter to see every asset quoted on both exchanges, with the thin ones marked. An asset quoted in US dollars on only one exchange never appears here.
How is the Coinbase share of volume worked out?
Coinbase 24-hour volume divided by the combined 24-hour volume of both exchanges. It shows where the trading happened, not who did it. Each exchange reports its volume in its own way, as described on the methodology page.
