Why this page counts from midnight UTC

Kraken’s ticker gives each pair’s last price and the opening price of the current UTC day. It does not give the price 24 hours ago. Rather than present a figure the source does not provide, this page reports the change Kraken does provide: from 00:00 UTC to the moment of collection.

That makes the time of day matter. Shortly after midnight UTC the changes are small, because little time has passed. Late in the UTC day the figures approach a full day’s move. For a window that always spans 24 hours, use the top crypto gainers table, check declines on the top crypto losers, or browse the crypto heatmap.

The bid-ask spread, and what it costs

The spread is the distance between the highest price a buyer is offering and the lowest price a seller is asking, as a percentage of the midpoint. Buying at the ask and selling at once at the bid loses exactly that percentage, before fees.

On the most traded pairs the spread is a few thousandths of a percent. On small pairs it can reach whole percentage points. A pair showing a 9% gain with a 3% spread has a far smaller realisable move than the headline suggests.

Kraken lists some assets that Coinbase Exchange does not, so a few names appear only here. Volume on this page is Kraken’s 24-hour amount multiplied by its 24-hour volume-weighted average price. Kraken symbols XBT and XDG are shown as BTC and DOGE.

Questions and answers

Why does this page say "today" instead of "24h"?

Kraken’s public ticker reports the opening price of the current UTC day, not the price 24 hours ago. The change shown is therefore measured from 00:00 UTC, and early in the UTC day it covers only a few hours.

What is the bid-ask column?

The gap between the best buy and the best sell order on Kraken at the time of collection, as a percentage of the midpoint. A wide spread means trading in and out costs more, and is common on thin markets.

Why can the same asset show different changes on the Coinbase and Kraken pages?

The two pages measure different periods: a rolling 24 hours on Coinbase Exchange, and the time since 00:00 UTC on Kraken. Prices on the two venues also differ slightly at any moment.

Is this page affiliated with Kraken?

No. It reads the exchange’s public market-data API and is not endorsed by or connected to Kraken.
