Why area follows volume, not change
A heatmap answers one question quickly: where did the money trade, and which way did it go? For that, the area of a cell has to stand for something stable. Here it stands for dollars traded in 24 hours, so the assets that take up most of the map are the ones most of the market actually traded.
Maps that size cells by percentage change do the opposite. The more violently a small asset moves, the more of the screen it takes, and the eye is drawn to exactly the markets where a displayed price means least. Sizing by volume keeps a 60% jump on a thin token off the map entirely, because it never passes the $1,000,000 floor.
Market capitalisation would be the conventional measure of size. It requires circulating-supply figures that exchange APIs do not carry, so it is not used here.
What the map can and cannot show
- Breadth at a glance. If most of the area is one colour, the day was one-sided among the assets that matter by volume.
- Concentration. When a few cells cover most of the map, that is the real distribution of trading in the snapshot, not an artefact of the layout.
- Not a ranking. Small cells can hide the day’s largest moves. Questions and answers
What decides the size of each cell?
The dollar volume traded in the last 24 hours on Coinbase Exchange and Kraken combined. Area is proportional to volume, so the most traded assets take the most room.
Why not size the cells by market cap?
Market capitalisation needs circulating-supply data that exchange APIs do not publish. Volume is the measure of size these sources do provide. Sizing by percentage change, another common choice, would make the most volatile small assets look the largest.
How do I read the colours without telling green from red?
Each cell shows an arrow and a signed percentage, and selecting a cell opens the full figures. The colour scale under the map pairs every shade with its range.
Which assets are on the map?
The 30 markets with the highest 24-hour volume among those above the $1,000,000 floor, excluding stablecoins.
